Frequently Asked Questions About Linux And The GPL
In this post we take a look at some of the frequently asked questions (FAQ) about Linux and the GNU General Public License (GPL).
Q: What's the difference between "free" or "libre" software and open source? Aren't they the same thing?

A: Free software and open source software have a huge overlap, but there are differences worth discussing. The term free software is used to describe software that respects users' freedoms. It's a philosophy and one that many people care about deeply.

Open source originated as a term used to talk about a pragmatic approach to developing software, as well as a definition of what is or isn't an "open source" license. Today it's largely used to describe all software under an open source license without being a deliberate attempt to disown the "free software" philosophy.

Looking Back On 30 Years Of Linux History With Red Hat's Stephen Smoogen
The Linux kernel and the second version of the GNU General Public License (GPLv2) turned 30 this year. As part of that major milestone we asked Red Hatters who had been using or contributing to Linux since the early days about their experiences
"What was it like contributing to Linux, what was it like using it? Could you imagine that Linux would have the impact it's had on the world up until now?

Q: What was your first encounter with Linux? When did you start contributing to the project?

A: My first encounter with Linux was in early 1992, when I was working on a digitized astronomy project. We had been struggling with getting moved from a 1972 miniframe to newer hardware. At first we tried an RTOS, but a professor said: 'Hey, try this other OS and see if you can get it to do what you want'. Where I had been stuck with getting basic email compiled, with Linux I had a fully operational 'Unix-like' system working after 20 floppies...

Using RHEL's Lightweight Kiosk Mode in Edge Deployments
Less is more. This is often the perspective behind requests we see that involve the words "light weight."
"I've come to loosely translate this to mean, "install and/or run only the applications I care about with no fluff."

The motivation can be any number of problems around decreasing the installed footprint for security purposes, maximizing system resources, or perceived stability improvements from using less software (less to go wrong).

Each of these points have their merit in any environment, but they are especially relevant in edge computing which is why we have a new means of deploying RHEL that helps tackle these concerns..."

Why Is Risk Management Important?
Enterprise risk management done correctly can mitigate different types or levels of risk. Depending on the industry and group, risk management should address the organization's business needs and respond to any risk event
Kent Barnett writes in CIOinsight, "At best, risk is challenging to handle at any business level. But enterprise risk management streamlines the company's risk portfolio.

What Is Enterprise Risk Management?

Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is the core principles and practices to guide a company through uncertain events. It provides a response and strategy to help the business when an event occurs. How To Choose The Best NVMe Storage Array
NVMe arrays are the highest performance storage solutions available, offering a massive speed boost for enterprises willing to make the investment. Here's how to select the right NVMe solution for you.
"Storage will never be as fast as system memory--that's just the nature of system architecture," suggests Tim Ferrill in Networkworld. "But thanks to NVMe (nonvolatile memory express), SSDs can deliver such blazingly fast performance, the penalty of 'going to disk' tends to be miniscule.

NVMe encompasses a family of specifications for how software talks to storage. It works over a number of transport methods, including PCI Express, RDMA, and TCP. Storage arrays that support the NVMe standard are the sports cars of storage, exposing super-fast storage media more directly and efficiently than any other mainstream method allows..."

What Are 3 Best Practices For Decentralized Storage Systems?
Decentralized storage technology can be confusing and complicated. These best practices, however, can help with implementation in enterprise IT infrastructure
"Decentralization is one of the hottest trends in cloud storage," writes Brien Posey in SearchStorage.

"Rather than storing all of an organization's data in a single location, decentralization breaks the data up into fragments and scatters them across many cloud storage devices.

Decentralized storage systems help insulate data against a cloud data center failure or cyber attack. They also help to keep data private because storage providers do not have a full copy of the data -- only encrypted fragments.

If an organization decides to try decentralized storage, there are three best practices to keep in mind..."

What CISOs Need To Know About Wi-Fi 6E
Wi-Fi 6E is the most secure wireless standard ever, but making the wrong implementation decisions or not understanding its risks will negate that advantage
Michael Hill reports in CSO Online that "Wi-Fi 6E is a technical extension of the Wi-Fi 6 standard to deliver improved Wi-Fi capacity, less interference, and higher throughput. Introduced in January 2021 by the Wi-Fi Alliance, Wi-Fi 6E allows for an increased frequency band of 6 GHz, providing up to 1,200 MHz of additional spectrum compared to Wi-Fi 6.

In April 2020, the FCC voted to open 6 GHz for unlicensed use, meaning that electrical consumer products such as phones, tablets, laptops, and routers could benefit from the enhanced Wi-Fi performance. Commenting last year, FCC chairman Ajit Pai said, 'I expect that 6 GHz unlicensed devices will become a part of consumers' everyday lives. And I predict the rules we adopt today will play a major role in the growth of the internet of things, connecting appliances, machines, meters, wearables, smart televisions, and other consumer electronics, as well as industrial sensors for manufacturing.'

There now are millions of connected offices, and most of these offices are not as protected digitally as traditional offices. Don't Let Your IT Team Make These 4 Mistakes In Cloud
As cloud adoption surges in popularity, it's important that your cloud team is well equipped to handle their next project. However, there are mistakes that can derail a project
"Ideally, a cloud team can lead a business through almost any cloud project," opines Stephen J. Bigelow in SearchCloudComputing. "But the path to cloud team success can be fraught with mistakes and missteps. To get the most from a cloud team, it's worth considering these four common oversights.

1. Wrong team and skills
